BASICS

• current timeframe: 1925, Aarhus, Denmark
• born March 1895 to a middle-class but socialist and non-conservative family
• has worked the past ten years first as an apprentice, then an assistant in Jacob Bjerre's photo studio
• she is saving up to be able to rent or buy her own studio across town where they won't be in competition with each other and she can create a name for herself
• has only been able to make a career for herself in photography, because Bjerre is a family friend who is willing to give her the chance, despite her being a woman
• although she is still unmarried at the age of 30, her parents accept her ambitions in life and don't pressure her about it
• her best friend since elementary school, Ulrick, however, is constantly waiting for her to welcome his interest in her, even if he isn't actively pushing for an answer
• she also has a string of girlfriends, some who are just acquaintances, some of whom she's slept with, but few stay in her orbit, seeing as most move on, get married, have children, lose contact
• except for when they need their family portraits done and come to Bjerre's studio; it's always an awkward experience, photographing them
• her best girlfriend is Karen, a local jazz singer who's lived for a couple of years in Paris, whom she has known since her days in grammar school; she was Anna's first crush and sexual experience
• from the Academy of the Fine Arts in Copenhagen, a photo competition has been announced, winning prize being 20,000 kroner and if Anna could win, she could start her own business
• nevertheless, she is struggling with choosing a subject for her twenty photo series, until she one day sees an upper-class Garçonne girl in the streets; fascinated she follows her and, at the café where she sits down for coffee, asks her whether she will model for her
• the girl, Lilly Toft-Eskildsen, accepts without hesitation and refuses compensation for it, she does it for the fun, she won't even sign a contract
• through their evenings in the studio, they get to know each other and eventually fall in love
• Lilly begins inviting her over to parties in her rich father’s house and Anna gets the chance to portray the Danish upper-class in their own environment, contrasting it with the dressed-down portraits she does of Lilly at Bjerre’s
• ends up not winning the competition but Lilly puts in a good word with her father who sponsors a new studio for Anna in her own neighbourhood, Trøjborg
• mood: daily life in 1920’s Aarhus; quiet, tranquil, undramatic
• we're aiming for a happy ending here

BACKGROUND

As the oldest child of four - two sisters, Ellen and Marie, and a brother, Gustav - Anna was brought up to be the model and the good example of the family, but as she grew older and the world changed around her, finally crumbling into disarray with WWI, she began viewing it as her duty to be a good example of freedom and individuality rather than expectation and traditional values. As such, she - with her father's reluctant blessing - chose to study photography and got an apprenticeship with her family's close friend, photographer Jacob Bjerre who was home from war, due to him being an invalid with a limp, something that pained him as a former corporal.

Under Bjerre's mentorship, she learned to work all modern camera types, develop pictures and arrange portrait- as well as art photography. And she had a talent for it. Bjerre often joked that she'd be better than him one day, when in reality Anna thinks she's better than him already. He has an old-fashioned, outdated style, where she keeps on top of current and modern trends. Her dream, if she can't become a travelling art photographer, is to own her own studio, be in charge of her own work and rise above assistant status.

Recently, an open photo competition has been announced by the Academy of the Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where a series of 20 photos has to be compiled - the prize is 20,000 kroner and an exhibit in a local art museum in the capital. While Anna would love to be shown, she is more interested in the money that could get her started in business and afford her a studio of her own, finally.
